What is an exchange? Think of an exchange as an online mall or market where you shop to find the perfect item, or in this case, the perfect health insurance plan.
The Affordable Care Act makes each state have a public exchange, while companies (like My Health Alliance/Blue Cross) can also build their own “specialty store” for shoppers. Instead of having lots of plans and benefits to make sense of. Blue Cross and My Health Alliance private exchange gives you just their plans. You will still have plenty to choose from, with much less clutter and confusion.

Enrollment deadlines are strict with the Affordable Care Act.
- You will only be able to enroll in a plan or change your plan during certain times of the year-unless you have a “qualifying event” (like a job loss, birth or divorce).
- Remember, if you miss the March deadline and don’t have a qualifying event, think about a My Health Alliance Short-Term plan.
- Coverage starts when you need it, not just the first of the month. Short-Terms plans, however, do not meet ACA requirements for having insurance. You may be fined
- 3-16-14 to 3-31-14 – Last opportunity to purchase Health Insurance unless you have a “qualifying event”, you can no longer make a plan change or enroll in a new plan.
